Launching a food business takes more than a great menu. Whether you are opening a delivery-first brand or catering business, or scaling food production, having a smooth onboarding process helps you get your kitchen up and running with fewer delays.
At Chef Collective, we have designed our onboarding journey to make the transition into your new commercial kitchen as straightforward as possible. From understanding your business requirements to preparing your kitchen, meeting food safety obligations and getting ready to trade, we will support you every step of the way.
Step 1: Getting to know your business
Every food business operates differently, so the first step is understanding your goals and operational needs. This allows us to recommend the most suitable kitchen space and ensure everything is ready before you move in.
We will ask for some key information, including:
- Business name and cuisine
- Expected operating hours
- Food business activities
- Previous experience operating in commercial kitchens
We will also require the contact details for your finance representative so invoices and account communications are sent to the right person.
Taking the time to understand your business from the outset helps us provide a smoother onboarding experience and ensures your kitchen is set up correctly from day one.
Step 2: Preparing your kitchen
This is the most hands-on part of the onboarding process. You will need to plan your kitchen layout and decide which equipment you will be bringing into your Chef Collective kitchen.
- Equipment schedule: Provide a list of all equipment you plan to install, including the make, model, dimensions and utility requirements. This helps us confirm compatibility with the kitchen’s electrical, gas and ventilation services.
- Kitchen layout plan: Submit a layout showing where your equipment will be positioned. A computer-aided design (CAD) drawing is preferred, although a scaled drawing from your equipment supplier is also acceptable.
- Kitchen modifications: Any fit-out works or customisations are subject to approval and will be carried out by authorised contractors to ensure compliance with site requirements.
Step 3: Meeting Australian food safety requirements
Meeting Australia’s food safety requirements is an essential step before your business can begin operating. We will provide guidance on the information and documentation you will typically need to help make the process as straightforward as possible.
- Food business registration: Depending on your location and business activities, you will need to register or notify your food business with the relevant local council or authority before commencing operations.
- Food safety requirements: Your business must comply with the food safety regulations applicable in your state or territory, including the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. Some businesses may also be required to nominate a qualified Food Safety Supervisor.
- Documentation and approvals: You may need to submit supporting documentation or undergo inspections, depending on your local council’s requirements. Our team can guide you through the information you will need before opening.
- Final approval: Once you have completed the necessary registrations, met the relevant food safety requirements and received any required approvals, you will be ready to begin operating from your Chef Collective kitchen.
Step 4: Getting your business ready to launch
This stage is all about getting your business ready to welcome customers. We will help you prepare your brand for launch and ensure you are ready to start taking orders.
- Delivery platform setup: If you plan to offer food delivery, we recommend onboarding with Uber Eats, DoorDash and Menulog to maximise your reach.
- Menu and photo review: Review your menu descriptions, pricing and food photography to ensure your online listings are accurate and appealing.
- Launch campaign: Plan introductory promotions and marketing activities to build awareness and generate your first orders.
Ongoing support after you move in
Our support continues even after you have launched. We are here to help your business operate smoothly as it grows, with ongoing guidance and resources whenever you need them.
- Account support: Our team is available to assist with day-to-day enquiries, facility support and operational guidance throughout your tenancy.
- Trusted industry network: We can connect you with trusted suppliers and service providers to help support your kitchen operations and business growth.
- Growing with your business: As your production requirements increase, you may wish to upgrade to one of our Central Production Units, which provide additional space and flexibility for larger-scale food production.
Whether you are launching your first food business or expanding an established operation, Chef Collective is here to support you every step of the way.
